Every Daz Studio user hits the same wall eventually: you build a great scene, hit render, and then watch a progress bar crawl for twenty minutes only to get a grainy, noisy image back. The instinct is to blame your graphics card. Sometimes that’s fair — Iray, the render engine built into Daz Studio, leans hard on GPU acceleration. But render quality and render speed are shaped by a lot of decisions you make before you ever hit the render button, and most of them have nothing to do with how expensive your GPU is.

Iray is a physically-based, unbiased renderer, which means it simulates how light actually bounces around a scene rather than faking shortcuts. It runs as a progressive process: it starts with a rough, noisy approximation and keeps refining it, sample by sample, until it either hits a target quality (convergence) or a time/iteration limit you set. That’s why a render preview looks grainy early on and gradually cleans up — you’re watching the algorithm converge in real time.
Iray is built to run on NVIDIA GPUs via CUDA and OptiX, and it will use the CPU as a fallback (or in combination with the GPU) when no compatible card is available or a scene doesn’t fit in VRAM. CPU-only rendering works, but it’s slower per sample, so scene complexity matters even more when you don’t have a powerful GPU to lean on.
The Fastest Win: Simplify What You’re Actually Rendering
The single biggest lever most people never touch is scene complexity — specifically, how much the renderer has to calculate light bouncing off. An enclosed room with four walls, a ceiling, and a floor forces Iray to calculate a huge number of light bounces before it converges, because light keeps reflecting back into the scene. Pull the walls out, or render in an open set, and convergence speeds up dramatically.
The same logic applies to lighting setups generally: a single HDRI environment light is far cheaper to compute than a rig of several separate light sources, especially emissive ones. If you’re rendering a character or a product shot rather than a full environment, a simple studio HDRI backdrop will get you to a clean image much faster than a multi-light setup — and it often looks more natural too.
Shaders, Textures, and Framing
Materials matter more than people expect. Make sure everything in frame is using the Iray Uber Shader (Daz Studio’s default Iray-native shader) rather than a leftover 3Delight material, since non-Iray shaders can force ugly workarounds or default rendering behavior. Keep texture resolution proportional to how close the camera actually is — a full 4K skin texture on a character that’s a small part of the frame is wasted computation.
Framing itself has an outsized effect on render time. A close-up portrait with lots of skin, hair, and fine detail in frame takes longer per sample than a wider shot of the same character, because skin’s subsurface scattering is one of the more expensive things Iray calculates. Pulling the camera back, or cropping in post rather than rendering tight, is a legitimate way to cut render time.

Finally, set a sensible render limit. Rather than letting a scene run indefinitely chasing a perfectly noise-free result, cap it by max time or max samples at a point where the image looks clean to your eye. Iray’s built-in denoiser (available as a post-processing pass in Render Settings) can also clean up residual noise in the last stretch, letting you stop the raw render earlier than you otherwise would.
Putting It Together
None of this requires new hardware. It requires treating the scene you build — not just the render engine — as the thing you’re optimizing. Fewer enclosed spaces, simpler lighting, appropriately-sized textures, sensible framing, and a render limit instead of “render until it looks perfect” will get most Daz Studio users to noticeably better-looking, faster renders on the same machine they already have.
